Gathering Leadership

Rev. Neema Cyrus-Franklin: Keynote Speaker

Rev. Neema Cyrus-Franklin is a dedicated spiritual leader, ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and a passionate advocate for holistic soul care. With over 25 years of experience serving at the local, regional, and national levels of the PC(USA), she has equipped and trained faith leaders in intergenerational Christian formation, camp and conference ministry, and mission—developing leaders who now serve across the globe.

Holding dual Master of Arts degrees in Divinity and Christian Education from the Interdenominational Theological Center, Rev. Neema continues to walk alongside individuals and communities as a spiritual wellness practitioner, congregational consultant, and coach. Her approach integrates faith, embodiment, and justice, drawing from her certifications in Somatic Attachment Therapy (The Embody Lab) and Coaching through Crossroads Antiracist Training & Coach Approach Skills Training (CAST). Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Neema is a social justice-oriented, trauma-sensitive yoga teacher (RYT-200) and Yoga Therapy Apprentice, currently completing an 858-hour Yoga Therapy certification. As a Yoga Therapy Apprentice, she is actively working with clients and leading classes, blending the wisdom of yoga, somatics, trauma sensitivity and spiritual care to support holistic healing. Through the Center for Soul Care, she offers a sanctuary for those seeking deep restoration—helping others find connection, grounding, and sacred care “Between Sundays” and beyond.

Rev. Kenda Creasy Dean: Keynote Speaker

Kenda Creasy Dean is an ordained United Methodist pastor and the Mary D. Synnott Professor of Youth, Church and Culture at Princeton Theological Seminary, where she works closely with the Institute for Youth Ministry and the Farminary. She currently serves as the senior strategist and principle investigator for three major PTS initiatives: the Polaris Young Adult Leadership Network (to support and connect young Christian leaders), the Ministry Collaboratory (to support congregations working with young adults), and the Teaching Spiritual Entrepreneurship Initiative (a 9-seminary initiative to create more entrepreneurial/creative faith leaders). Kenda is the author of numerous books, including Innovating for Love: Joining God’s Expedition through Christian Social Innovation, Almost Christian: What the Faith of Our Teenagers Is Telling the American Church, and The Godbearing Life: The Art of Soul-Tending in Youth Ministry with Ron Foster and Megan DeWald (the 25th anniversary edition was updated and released in 2023). Recently named the 2024 Distinguished Leader in Innovation by Wesleyan Impact Partners, she co-founded Ministry Incubators in 2014 with fellow PTS alumnus Mark DeVries to support theologically-responsible innovation and sustainability in ministry. A graduate of Miami University (Ohio), Wesley Theological Seminary (Washington, DC), and Princeton Theological Seminary (New Jersey), Kenda has pastored churches in Arlington, VA, College Park, MD, and Kingston, NJ. She and her husband Kevin love hanging out with their hilarious grown kids and digging their toes in the sand on the Jersey shore.

James Potts: Soul Care Leader

James Potts is an Associate Pastor, DEdMin candidate, and quilter who believes creativity is a sacred practice. Serving at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, he helps people of all ages encounter God through making, storytelling, and shared experiences. His work weaves together theology, fabric, and imagination, grounded in the conviction that the Spirit often shows up at tables covered in thread, color, and curiosity.

Josh Sweeney: Music Leader

Rev. Josh Sweeney serves as a pastor at Knox Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kansas, where he works with people of all ages to help them grow in faith, community, and creativity in worship. He has a passion for bringing music, storytelling, and the arts into the life of the church, especially alongside young people. Josh loves creating spaces where faith feels alive, participatory, and full of joy.

Oliver Page: Music Leader

Oliver Page is the Director of Youth Ministry for Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, Maryland. He has been doing youth ministry for almost 10 years in various forms and, during that time, has led contemporary worship for church services, youth groups, mission trips, camps, and more. Unfortunately, he simply can’t beat the allegations of always being that guy who shows up to everything with an acoustic guitar- but he wouldn’t want it any other way, and he is beyond excited to be leading worship for Come to the Mountains this Fall!

Workshop Session 2: Tuesday, October 7, 1:15-2:15pm

Soul Care: Prayer Walk
with the Rev. Kara Smith-Laubenstein

Experience a guided, contemplative prayer walk through an outdoor labyrinth. This spiritual practice invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and listen for God’s still, small voice.

Idea Exchange: Youth Ministry Year-Long Planning
with the Rev. Kiersten Hill and the Rev. Eileen VanGieson

Let’s talk calendars, rhythms, and curriculum. Share strategies and templates for planning a sustainable and Spirit-led year of ministry with youth.

Learning Lab: Holy Week in Palestine: The Horrible & the Holy
with the Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow

Bruce has led or participated in four delegations to Palestine since October 2023. Coordinated by Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, he has had the privilege of meeting with artists, activists, religious leaders, farmers, etc, who have tasked these delegations to tell their stories as much as possible. During our time, Bruce will share a bit about current conditions in the West Bank as well as what it was like to spend Holy Week in East Jerusalem.

Workshop Session 3: Tuesday, October 7, 3-4pm

Soul Care: Kintsugi (Art)
with Leslie Mauerman and Darlene Elsner

Explore healing through the Japanese art of kintsugi—repairing broken pottery with gold. In this hands-on workshop, reflect on how God brings beauty from our brokenness through creativity and restoration.

Idea Exchange: Retreats and Mission/Service Trips
with the Rev. Tully Fletcher and the Rev. Kiersten Hill

Exchange tips, stories, and best practices for organizing meaningful trips—from logistics to spiritual formation. Whether you’ve led 20 or none, come learn from others and share what’s worked (and what hasn’t!).

Learning Lab: Brave Conversations on Sexuality
with Kim Ness

Come and learn about Brave Conversations on Sexuality, a new PYWA curriculum resource designed to help church communities engage youth in thoughtful, age-appropriate conversations about sexuality from a reformed faith-based perspective.

Workshop Session 4: Wednesday, October 8, 11am-12pm

Soul Care: Reading Corner
with Kate Satterstrom

Sink into a cozy chair and read that book you brought with you and have been meaning to read. This is a quiet, introvert-friendly space for personal renewal through reading and reflection.

Idea Exchange: Partnering with Parents, Volunteers, and Other Churches
with Oliver Page & the Rev. Eileen VanGieson

Youth ministry isn’t a solo gig. Join this conversation about building healthy relationships with the adults who surround and support your youth ministry—including other congregations in your region.

Learning Lab: Theology & Spiritual Practice of Wonder
with the Rev. Dr. Kathryn Threadgill

Together we will further explore the Wonder of God as a theological understanding needing to be reclaimed in our churches and ministry contexts, so that we might be transformed to imagine and innovatively share the gospel of Jesus Christ with youth today. We will examine God’s Wonder in a wandering and wonder-lost world, and discern ways of “going marveling” so that God, in Christ Jesus, might encounter and transform us as witnesses to the “new things” God is doing in the Church.

Workshop Session 5: Wednesday, October 8, 1:15-2:15pm

Soul Care: Garden Reflections
with Cheryl Wright

Connect with creation and Creator in this contemplative time of reflection and grounding in CPC’s community garden. You’ll be guided through questions to help you reflect amidst blooming life.

Idea Exchange: Youth Sunday and Involving Youth in Worship
with Rebekah Witt & Oliver Page

Explore creative ways to involve youth in worship leadership year-round—not just on Youth Sunday. Share ideas for empowering students to share their voices, gifts, and faith with the wider church.
