First Presbyterian Church’s mission, is, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to spread the Word of God through Jesus Christ and live lives of Justice, Mercy, and Faith. That means we believe that children should be both heard and seen (and even lead worship), take the Bible seriously but not literally, use inclusive language, and are LGBTQ-affirming. In the past year, around 30 youths and 50 adults have participated in our Christian Education programming, with regular attendance around 15 youth and 25 adults at our weekly activities. Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, is a small city featuring a vibrant arts community, Big Ten athletics, and easy access to outdoor recreation.
The Director of Christian Education encourages spiritual growth through all ages of congregational life, serving to build a welcoming environment for the curiosity of children, a safe space for youth to explore their faith, support for families doing their best to grow in discipleship, and ongoing challenge to adults seeking to draw closer to God.
